Frances McDormand Called For Female-Led Movies, Even In Her First Speech

When Frances McDormand won an Oscar this year for her role in Thee Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, she encouraged actors to include an inclusion rider in their contracts — a clause demanding diversity on set.

But Frances has long asked for female-led movies and diversity, even in her first Oscar acceptance speech for Fargo in 1997:

“We five women were fortunate to have the choice — not just the opportunity — but the choice to play such rich female characters,” she said of her fellow nominees. “I congratulate producers like Working Title and PolyGram for allowing directors to make autonomous casting decision based on qualifications, and not just market value. And I encourage writers and directors to really keep these really interesting female roles coming — and while you’re at it you can throw in for a few men as well.”

You go, Frances!
