Renee Zellweger is knee deep in research, preparing for her upcoming role as Judy Garland in the biopic Judy, based on the late singer and legend’s life.

There’s so much material out there,” Renee said to The Hollywood Reporter. “She’s so comfortable,” she said of Judy, who died of an accidental barbiturate overdose in 1969. “You could see she’s being herself. She was so funny and cool.”

The film starts shooting this February, and when THR recommended a call to Liza Minnelli, Renee chummed up to the idea.

“I think I might have to do that — thanks for the idea,” she told THR. “It sounds like a good excuse to make a phone call.”
