Mike Nichols’s ex-business partner Norma Stevens and writer Steven M.L. Aronson have written a new book about the late photographer Richard Avedon.

In it, they write that Richard confided in Norma, saying that he and Mike Nichols had a romantic affair. The secret is shared in the chapter entitled “Forbidden Affinities.”

“I’ve got a secret. Mike Nichols,” he apparently told Norma. He added, “We had so much going for us . . . We were made for each other. At one point, we even thought about running away together. Eloping, we called it — leaving our wives and our lives and moving to Gay Paree… I was the one who introduced Mike to Paris, that time when we shot the collections for the Bazaar — he loved it as much as me.”

In the end, “We chickened out but we were together for years, till Mike met someone else.”

Avedon allegedly concluded: “Later on we started things up again — there were sparks, but no fire. But we’ve stayed best friends. And we’ll always have Paris.”
