Caroline Rhea Said She Did ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Because Of A Bad Breakup

The 1990s hit show Sabrina The Teenage Witch is still replaying in my head, and one of my favorite characters, zany aunt Hilda (i.e. Caroline Rhea), now looks back and remembers that she only did the show at the last minute after a bad breakup.

“I had just gotten back from this horrible trip to Hawaii with the boyfriend and the trip was so bad that we broke up before the pictures were developed. And we had a polaroid — it was before phones,” she explained. That’s when the creator Nell Scovell’s explained the character to her.

“She said, ‘She’s a witch and she’s recently imprisoned the man that didn’t love her in her ring.’” Caroline remembers. “And I was like, ‘I’ll do it!’”
