Stephen King Explains Why Movie Version of ‘The Dark Tower’ Didn’t Work

Steven King’s novel The Dark Tower was adapted for film, and apparently fans weren’t buying it at all. Two months later, the author reflects on why he thinks it went wrong in an interview with Vulture.

“The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages,” he said. “The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way. That was something that had to be overcome.”

The Nikolaj Arcel-directed flick starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Steven credited screenwriter Akiva Goldsman for “a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie.”

Critics called the movie “astonishingly bad,” “generic,” “a complete disaster,” and a film that’s “embarrassed of itself.”

Oh boy.
