Sean Spicer’s surprise Emmy appearance is all the rage this morning, shocking audiences. But turns out, Emmys host Stephen Colbert approached him to do it last week and it wasn’t exactly hard for him to yes.

“There was timing involved,” said one CBS source to Entertainment Weekly. “Getting in and out of backstage and driving a podium across the main stage of the Emmys is no easy feat.”

Sean later told EW outside the Governors Ball after the show: “Life outside of the White House has been shockingly enjoyable. Everyone has been very gracious” even though “it’s not exactly a Republican crowd.”
