‘Master of None’ Lena Waithe Is the First Black Woman to Win for Comedy Writing

Lena Waithe’s speech was AH-mazing last night, and it only makes me feel more gitty that she also made history as the first African-American woman to win for comedy writing — for co-writing the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None with Aziz Ansari.

The episode itself was her own experience of coming out as a lesbian.

“The things that make us different — those are our superpowers,” she said during the speech, urging people to “go out there and conquer the world. It would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it.”

Lena is also launching a Showtime series called The Chi, about her coming of age years in Chicago.
