Will NYC’s Statue of Christopher Columbus be Replaced With Joe DiMaggio?

AM 970 radio personality Joe Piscopo seems to propose replacing the statue of Christopher Columbus in NYC’s Columbus Circle with renowned baseball player Joe DiMaggio.

“If they’re stupid enough to take down Columbus, then they better put up DiMaggio,” he said. “Joe DiMaggio comprised such an integral part of New York and Italian-American history that a statue of Joe, derived from his iconic photographs of ‘The Swing,’ would be not only politically correct, but a fantastic addition to the spirit of Columbus Circle.”

As Page Six points out, “at one time, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner wanted to put statues of DiMaggio in both Central Park and center field in the old Yankee Stadium. But Joltin’ Joe objected because he was still alive and didn’t believe in monuments to the living.”
