Madonna’s $19K Corset Sold at Auction Might Actually Be Fake

The corset Madonna wore for her 1984 album-cover shoot for Like a Virgin was bid on by an anonymous collector for over $19,000. Now, French-born artist and designer, Maripol, says it’s fake.

“It’s fake. I designed the corset she wore on the cover of ‘Like a Virgin.’ Just compare photos of the corsets side to side and you can see they are different,” he said.

A spokesperson for the auction company GottaHaveRockAndRoll.com bit back and said Maripol’s claims were false, saying the two corsets were purchased at Macy’s for Madonna to use on the cover shoot.

“It’s a lie,” Maripol fumed. “There was only one corset, and I sewed it myself. I’m upset someone paid so much for a fake.”

The auction ended Saturday with nearly $750,000 in sales. The auction also had other Madonna items, such as a breakup letter from Tupac and a pair of worn satin panties and hairbrush with her hair still in it.
