O.J. Simpson Was Granted Parole. Now What?!

O.J. Simpson served nine years for his 33-year sentence for 12 convictions. Unless you were living under a rock, you may have missed that just minutes ago he was granted parole — that means he’ll be walking out of prison a semi-free man around October 1.

When hearing the decision, O.J. reacted pretty emotionally with a smile eerily similar to the smile had gave when he hear “not guilty” over 20 years ago. He worded “thank you” before he stood and returned to his cell where he’ll stay till October.

O.J. has not been seen publicly since being granted parole in a 2013 hearing for lesser charges.

The two women and two men of the board (one of which was wearing a Kansas City Chiefs tie) also listened to O.J.’s daughter, who gave an emotional testimony in favor of the release of her father.

“I’ve come here and spent nine years making no excuses about anything,” O.J. said. “I am sorry things turned out the way they did. … I tell inmates all the time ‘Don’t complain about your grind. Do your time.’ … I believe in the jury system. I will honor the decision. … I have done my time and I’d like to get back to my friends. And believe it or not I do have some friends. I don’t think anyone could have honored this institution better. … I’m sorry it happened.”

He added: “I’m at a point in my life where all I want to do is spend as much time as I can with my children and my friends. I’ve done my time and I’ve done it was well and respectfully as I can. … I’ve honored their verdict and not complained for nine years.”
