This is How the Men of ‘Game of Thrones’ Fake Their Sex Scenes

Ever wonder how men fake sex on screen (especially when it comes to the “pay off?” What is that soft liquid goo anyway?)? Well thankfully, Refinery29 is breaking it down for us — play by play.

Refinery29 spoke with Melissa Lackersteen, the makeup artist responsible for Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Gwendolyn Christie, and Carice van Houten, among others, for seasons 1 to 3 of Game of Thrones.

Melissa reveals there is fake semen all over the place in the show.

“I’ve got a bit of a story about semen,” she said. Apparently, while filming a scene with Ros and a lover in season one, one of the writers approached Melissa and asked if she could simulate semen:

“They had just suddenly thought of it,” she explained. “I literally ran back to the makeup truck and found the most smelly cleanser for something white, and KY Jelly — good ol’ KY Jelly. I mixed it and put it in [the actor’s] own hand because I didn’t want to actually put it on him because it had to go on his pubes and his belly area. The only [problem] I found was that it kept going too clear. So, it wasn’t that obvious what it was meant to be. At least, it looked wet.”

Thankfully, some porn performers were serving as extras during some of the nude scenes, including adult star Maisie Dee, who played a prostitute Joffrey orders for Ros to torture in pleasure. She recommended Gaviscon Liquid (antacid syrup).

“The white one, not the pink,” Melissa said. “After that, I always kept little sachets of Gaviscon liquid for semen. That’s the best one. It stays a little bit white, but it’s clear-y white.”
