As if we needed another reason to love Kristen Bell!

The actress is huge advocate of pet adoption over pet purchasing, and wants to spread the word. She explained the difference quite candidly to PEOPLE, saying:

“I chose to adopt as opposed to going to a breeder because I wanted a family member, not a handbag. It should be less about the purchase and more about connecting with a someone who also needs some companionship.”

The star is speaking out about the topic for the new Wallis Annenberg PetSpace. The animal-centered community space has just opened in Playa Vista, California, and features an interactive adoption area and an education center dedicated to helping humans and their pets.

Kristen takes her animal bonds very seriously. She told PEOPLE:

“I have treated all my dogs like my kids. To me, they’re just kids I didn’t birth.”

Charlize Theron shares her sentiments, encouraging others to adopt their own “weird” and “beautiful” unconditional friends. Watch the clip below:
