You Will Not Believe How Much George Clooney’s Tequila Company Sold For!

Though he’s probably currently in the throws of some major newborn-induced sleep deprivation, George Clooney has another big reason to celebrate.

The actor is selling the tequila company he started with Rande Gerber and Michael Meldman in 2013, and the selling price doesn’t suck. Like, at all.

Casamigos, which translates to “house of friends,” began as a private selection of tequilas meant just for family and friends. But when the team was required to get licensed in order to continue making it, they took the label public.

Rande Gerber told CNBC back in November:

“It immediately took off. Right now, we’re the fastest growing ultra-premium tequila in the country.”

Now, spirits company Diageo is buying the company for the cool price of up to $1 billion. They will initially shell out $700 million, with the potential for another $300 million based on the tequila’s sales over the next decade.

In an email to CNBC, George said:

“If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion dollar company, I don’t think we would have said yes. This reflects Diageo’s belief in our company and our belief in Diageo. But we’re not going anywhere. We’ll still be very much a part of Casamigos. Starting with a shot tonight. Maybe two.”

The transaction is slated to close during the second half of 2017.
