Laura Dern Calls Out Narcissism in Actors: ‘It Can Only Last So Long’

Actress Laura Dern has called on advertisers to create teachable moments where Hollywood actors can start talking passionately about other issues, and stop talking about themselves (good luck!).

In a discussion at a Cannes Lions session that pitted Hollywood against the YouTube generation, Laura and YouTube creator Grace Helbig talked about how both mediums are influencing the world.

Laura mentioned how her role in Wild sparked awareness about lung cancer. “I was happy to do that, for me it was an act of service, a beautiful teachable moment. I am always stunned by the amount of press I have done in my life with respected actors, and we sit there and wait for someone to ask something that we are passionate about, rather than something funny that happened on the set.”

Then she continued: “Narcissim only lasts for so long, and I’m thinking ‘Oh my god, how long can he talk about himself?… There should be a cause we can talk about,’” In regards to the era of her parents (actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd): “Part of the brand was the mystique of the actor, you did one magazine cover and the Johnny Carson show, and that was it… it was about being unreachable and untouchable…

“It has completely changed. Actresses now have the luxury of entering the world of beauty and fashion. The world of advertising supports film, it also supports actors, and great filmmakers like David Lynch and Robert Altman, advertising gives us the chance to work with autonomy in film.”
