It looks like Jim Carrey is headed for a trial.

On Wednesday, a judge refused to dismiss the two wrongful death lawsuits filed against the comedian. His girlfriend, Cathriona White, was found dead in her home in September of 2015 after taking a several different prescription painkillers. Her mother, Brigid Sweetman, and her estranged husband, Mark Burton have sued the actor, claiming that he provided the drugs that led to her overdose.

Jim’s lawyer, Raymond Boucher, had requested the lawsuits be thrown out because they were “predatory” and “malicious.”

In a statement given when the lawsuits originated, Jim said:

“What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world. I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”

Jim and Cathriona, a make-up artist who struggled with depression, started dating in 2012 and were on and off until her death, though she was legally married to Mark at the time.

Judge Deirdre Hill has set a trial date for April 26, 2018, and estimated that it will last 20 days.
