A video has gone viral of a sea lion pulling a little girl into the water by her dress in Richmond, British Columbia.

Thankfully, she is totally fine (just a little wet). But the footage is scary for all parents nonetheless.

As people were throwing bits of food into the water, it seems like one sea lion might have jumped the gun. The family was pretty shaken up, as seen in the video taken by an onlooker named Michael Fujiwara.

“The little girl has her back to the sea lion and it would appear that the sea lion sees part of her dress, thinks it’s food, reaches up, grabs at the food and pulls her in by the dress,” director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia, Andrew Trites, told CBC. “But it wasn’t food, of course.”

Sea lions aren’t dangerous, he reiterated, but the lesson is to alway keep a safe distance.
