The American Idol alum will revisit his alma mater in the form of a judge for the upcoming revival of the show, Us Weekly confirmed.

ABC announced earlier in the month that it had picked up the show that aired it’s final episode on Fox in April of 2016. In a statement on May 9, Disney co-chairman, Ben Sherwood said:

“American Idol on ABC … that has a nice ring to it. Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC’s lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol.”

The rocker placed fourth on the fifth season of American Idol, with Taylor Hicks taking the win and Katharine McPhee in second place. Chris’s record sales rank third for all former contestants, just behind Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

A source told Us Weekly, “They wanted a panel of all ex-contestants. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson were all on their wish list.”  That won’t quite materialize, though, as Kelly and Jennifer have signed on to the coach on The Voice.

Rumor has it that Katy Perry is being considered for American Idol as well.
