The Writers Guild of America overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if their demands are not met in contract negotiations.

These discussions are taking place with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Remember the last strike back in 2007-08?  Work stopped, and many shows were impacted by the events.

The WGA will authorize a strike if a deal isn’t made within a week.  The main strike issues are more pay for TV writers and a rescue of the WGA’s failing Health Plan, which faces projected deficits of $145 million over the next three years, according to

The main strike issues are more pay for TV writers and a revamping of the WGA’s failing Health Plan, which faces projected deficits of $145 million over the next three years, according to Deadline.com.

The guild said 96 percent of its members voted for the authorization, with 6,310 members casting ballots.

This is what the AMPTA said about the pending strike:

“The Companies are committed to reaching a deal at the bargaining table that keeps the industry working. The 2007 Writers Strike hurt everyone. Writers lost more than $287 million in compensation that was never recovered, deals were cancelled, and many writers took out strike loans to make ends meet. We remain focused on our objective of reaching a deal with the WGA at the bargaining table when the Guild returns on April 25th.”

Let’s hope this strike doesn’t happen as it will shut down Hollywood, and also cost the industry an estimated range of hundreds of millions to possibly $2.5 billion.

We will keep you posted on the outcome!
