Shannen Doherty gave a moving speech at a congressional briefing in Washington D.C. on Tuesday over the protection of dogs and cats from human consumption.

The actress, who credits her dog for discovering her recent cancer battle, said, ‘”We as Americans have trained dogs to do amazing things — they take bullets for our officers and sniff bombs. They are part of us and for us to not stand up and protect animals … we have to protect our own.”

According to the Washington Post, Shannen sat next to the government’s biggest heavy hitters dedicated to banning the transport of dogs and cats meant for the pet-flesh market, or a market where they sell them to get eaten. Her brother, Sean Doherty, is also a lobbyist and he introduced her to the panel of legislators working on the bill.

Shannen is no stranger to protecting animals. She’s is an advocate for the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation.
