Here’s What the Richest Man in the World Says About Donald Trump

Microsoft’s Bill Gates is one of the richest people on the planet, with a net worth of $3.7 billion, according to Forbes. That’s a lot of dough!

Clearly, the richest guy in the world is very good business — the kind of business our president says he’s pretty decent at. But Donald Trump hasn’t exactly been winning America’s approval (in fact, the latest poll shows he’s at an all time low). So naturally, Bill had a few things to say:

The multibillionaire expressed concerns over Trump’s cuts to foreign aid programs, claiming it’s an indirect way to keep Americans safe.

“I understand why some Americans watch their tax dollars going overseas and wonder why we’re not spending them at home,” Bill wrote in an op-ed for TIME magazine. “Here’s my answer: These projects keep Americans safe. And by promoting health, security and economic opportunity, they stabilize vulnerable parts of the world…

“A more stable world is good for everyone,” he continued. “But there are other ways that aid benefits Americans in particular. It strengthens markets for U.S. goods: of our top 15 trade partners, 11 are former aid recipients. It is also visible proof of America’s global leadership. Popular support for the U.S. is high in Africa, where aid has such a dramatic impact. When you help a mother save her child’s life, she never forgets. Withdrawing now would not only cost lives, it would create a leadership vacuum that others would happily fill.”

He also said he recently had his first conversation with Trump as president, and he walked away from it very optimistic (even though Trump has a track record of changing his mind immediately after one walks away).

“In the same way President Kennedy talked about the space mission and got the country behind that,” Bill previously said on CNBC after a phone call with Trump, “I think whether it’s education or stopping epidemics … [or] in this energy space, there can be a very upbeat message that [Trump’s] administration [is] going to organize things, get rid of regulatory barriers, and have American leadership through innovation.”

Bill Gates was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.
