For the first time, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the agency is investigating “the nature of any links” between Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election as well as the campaign of Donald Trump.

At a House Intelligence Committee hearing, Comey said he couldn’t go into details due to the ongoing investigation, but added that the Department of Justice authorized him to confirm the investigation to the public.

According to Comey, the investigation will aim to show “whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.” Needless to say, directly after he announced the news, outlets immediately jumped on the story and broadcast it across the nation.

While Comey said they found no evidence that votes were changed, he adds that their investigation will include Russia interfering in the election overall: “We approach this work in an open-minded, independent way,” he said.

The investigation began in late July. And while there is no timeline for the end of the investigation, he refused to comment on any specifics about whether any members of his campaign were involved as well.
