Dwayne Johnson’s Puppy Died After Eating a Poisonous Plant — Here Are 10 Foods You Should Never Give Your Pets
Do you guys remember when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sadly had to put his dog Brutus down because he ate a poisonous mushroom? Our hearts melted…
While seeing one of man’s best friends getting put to rest is always heartbreaking, there is one thing we can learn from this. As Upworthy reported, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says their Animal Poison Control Center handled nearly 167,000 cases in 2014 — and 13 percent of them involved human foods or plants.
That being said, it’s always important to know the kinds of food and plants you have in your house that are poisonous to pets. Here are a few, as reported by Upworthy.
- Chocolate — It could cause vomiting, seizures, and even death for dogs due to it containing theobromine and caffeine.
- Sago Palms — A lot of people have these types of plants, and the whole thing is poisonous, in fact only one seed can result in liver failure.
- Raw bread dough — Because of the yeast, it can cause the stomach of cats and dogs to expand and restrict blood flow. It also produces alcohol, leading to alcohol poisoning.
- Hops — These plants can increase a dog’s temperature to high levels.
- Macadamia Nuts — Even just a few can make pets sick, causing muscle weakness, vomiting and rapid increase in body temperature, especially when combined with chocolate.
- Chrysanthemums — Eating these beautiful flowers can cause dermatitis, vomiting, and incoordination in dogs and cats.
- Garlic, onions, leeks, chives, scallions — The whole garlic family can affect red blood cells, causing anemia, organ failure and death. Keep in mind when they’re in soups.
- Amaryllis flowers — Many of us have these flowers during the holidays, so be careful. When ingested, they can cause tremors, hyper salivation and intense stomach pain.
- Grapes and raisins — Surprisingly, they cause rapid kidney failure, though vets still don’t know why. But best to stay away.
- Anything moldy or rotten — Mold has life-threatening toxins that harm not just your pets, but us as well. Avoid giving your pets old and rotting food, especially fruits and nuts growing from trees. You never know if they’re rotting from the inside.
