Beauty & The Beast Will Have First Ever Gay Disney Character!

It’s about time!

Turns out, Disney has been hiding a big secret during the making of Beauty and the Beast. According to an interview with British LGBT publication Attitude, director Bill Condon revealed that Gaston’s lovable assistant LeFou is going to explore his sexuality in a “small but significant subplot.”

To be honest, who didn’t know that LeFou was madly in love with Gaston — it’s pretty obvious!

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” Bill said. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Emma Watson and her sexy beast Dan Stevens also discussed the underlying queer sensibility: “I think it was really important for Dan and I to develop and understand why each of our characters feel as if they don’t fit in,” Emma said. “I certainly felt watching the original that I wanted to know more about why Belle feels that she’s different and why she wants to be different and why she’s naturally different.”
