Did You Know the “Oscars” May Have Been Named After Someone’s Butt?

The Academy Awards has long been called the Oscars. It’s been happening for so long now that we’ve forgotten where it came from — well, some have. Not us!

One of the biggest rumors out there is that Bette Davis — yes this Bette Davis…

… named the award “Oscar” because its butt reminded her of her husband’s (Harmon Oscar Nelson Jr.) when he got out of the shower. But Bette’s rumor isn’t the only one in Tinseltown.

Another legend goes that Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky coined the name after he was sick of writing the “gold statue of the academy” time and the again. He claimed to have started calling it “Oscar” due to an old vaudeville joke.

Meanwhile, other legends have said that Margaret Herrick started naming the statue Oscar after an uncle of hers. Seeing as she was the Academy librarian (turned director), her little name caught on quick.
