Executive producer of the hit 1990s show Saved by the Bell, Peter Engel, came out with a new memoire — and it’s so juicy.

In the book, Engel reveals that he’s a recovering drug addict, reports Radar Online. He found religion and sobriety in 1979, which saved his life.

“Monday through Friday, I would wake up and smoke two joints, pop speed to get through work, snort a gram of cocaine, and take a handful of Quaaludes to fall asleep.”

Thank God for sobriety, otherwise he might never have filmed the pilot of Saved by the Bell in 1987. Engel recalls that one of the stars, Dustan Diamon (i.e. “Screech”) was always causing trouble.

“Compared to the other young actors on our show, he seemed immature, more like a child,” he wrote.

Another fun fact was that Mario Lopez’s A.C. Slater was originally written to be a kina Italian “John Travolta-ish” type. But Lopez clearly won their hearts, and they changed it to a Mexican American teen.

Lark Voorhies (“Lisa Turtle”) was almost fired: “Her performance fell flat,” Engel said. “She just didn’t show up, wasn’t present.”

And, as if we couldn’t tell, Mark Paul Gosselaar and Tiffany Amber Thiessen dated in real life, after their characters had split on the show, Radar Online reports. Later, however, she dated Mario Lopez and made it very clear by “holding hands” and “being cutesy.”

But trying to control teenagers in a hit show is hard. Apparently, Engel had to rally to get them to behave, claiming there were problems with cliques, tears, flare-ups, and accusations.

The clencher?

The romance between Thiessen and Lopez ended when she walked in on him cheating on her during a live taping!

“He was in his dressing room, making out with an extra, and Tiffani came in, catching him red-handed,” Engel writes. “She was wearing his letter jacket and, in rage, ripped it off and threw it at him. After that, she ran out.”
